Centurion

Centurion is a town situated in the Gauteng Province of South Africa. Located halfway between Pretoria and Midrand at the intersection of the N1 and N14 highway, Centurion forms part of the City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality. The Waterkloof Air Force Base, as well as the Swartkops Air Force Base are located in Centurion.

Centurion has come a long way from being a sleepy southern suburb of Pretoria, with smallholdings and large open spaces. Since 1994 Centurion experienced rapid growth with many businesses having relocated there, and property development has boosted the ever expanding city limits of Centurion.

Centurion features modern shopping malls, several entertainment spots, a theatre, golf courses and a driving range. Centurion hosts several hotels as well as a variety of smaller Guest Houses.The U.N.I.T.A.S. hospital in Centurion is the largest private hospital on the African continent and is part of the Netcare group. Technology companies like DENEL, Siemens, SAAB Grintek Technologies, Telkom and others are all located in Centurion.

Centurion is located on the Highveld like Johannesburg and Pretoria and has a similar climate, with dry, sunny winters, and warm to hot summers (October - April) tempered by late-afternoon showers often accompanied by spectacular thunder and lightning. Hailstorms are not uncommon either. Summer temperatures range from the mid 20's to the mid 30's (°Celsius). Centurion's weather tends to follow the slightly warmer Pretoria, when compared to that of Johannesburg.

Centurion is dotted with estates touted as the latest in lifestyle living. These gated villages have attracted a cosmopolitan community and Centurion functions as something of a mini city of its own - one that will eventually close the now almost nonexistent gap between Johannesburg and Pretoria. Centurion developed from what was the Lyttelton township on the farm Droogegrond, and today includes 20 to 30 different suburbs.
